7 Best boba tea flavors you should try after your first time

Flavor 1. Watermelon

The perfect fruity flavor for hot summer days, bing bing bing, the winner is Watermelon. Your taste buds are going to thank you first and then ask you for more.

Who knew that watermelon could make such a tasty pairing with milk tea? Deep down, we all knew.

Try this flavor if you want to be wooed!

Flavor 2. Blueberry

Blueberries have a great reputation for being great in pop tarts, pies, and oatmeal.

Why wouldn’t it make an awesome flavor of milk tea? Exactly! Try this one out if you’re a fan of blueberries. It’ll leave you feeling the opposite of blue!

This flavor is light on taste and is easily the perfect way to ease your way into trying more bold flavors.

Flavor 3. Jasmine tea with sea salt foam or cheese foam

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more interesting, here’s a drink that will change your life!

Sweet meets salty, salty meets sweet. It’s the best of both worlds, like trail mix. This tea is a great choice if you’re not a fan of a super sweet taste.

Ask for less sugar and this drink becomes magical. It’s very natural tasting and not overbearing.

Flavor 4. Oreo

America’s favorite cookie goes well with ice cream, plain milk, and you guessed it! Milk tea!

If the bubble tea shop exists, it must have an oreo milk tea.

If not, you may have to take a trip to the nearest big city where there are many boba tea shops to choose from.

Your mission is to find the oreo milk tea! It’ll be worth the trip!

Flavor 5. Hokkaido (Okinawa)

Hokkaido milk tea has a black tea base and is usually sweetened with brown sugar, honey, or caramel.

It’s on the sweeter side of bubble tea. Okinawa has a similar flavor. The difference is that Okinawa is sweetened with kokuto sugar.

The sugar has a rich taste that enriches flavors. Sometimes Okinawa bubble tea is hard to find so when you have the rare chance to try this bubble tea, go for it!

Flavor 6. Captain Crunch or another cereal flavor

Hopefully, your neighborhood boba shop has cereal-based bubble tea.

This is the perfect drink to fulfill one of your summer morning cravings. This flavor is usually made as a blended drink and is topped with cereal.

Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, and Coco-Puffs are a few cereal bubble teas that I’ve tried and they taste just like the cereals. Amazing!

Flavor 7. Horchata

If you are a cinnamon lover, you’re going to love this one!

Ever wondered what it would be like if Cinnamon toast crunch milk was turned into the perfect drink?

Horchata is just that. Horchata is usually made by soaking rice and cinnamon sticks overnight and then making a sweetened drink from the leftover liquid.

Horchata is amazing on its own but when you make it a little creamier and add boba, you’ve got yourself a boba power drink!

There are endless possibilities

My favorite bubble milk tea is sweet potato milk tea with oreo and red bean paste.

Whenever I travel to a new city, I always find a bubble tea spot to try out a new flavor. My taste buds have been around the world!

I won’t apologize for getting you addicted but I do want to advise you not to treat yourself often. Boba tea does have a lot of sugar. But when you do treat yourself, try a new flavor!

If you can imagine the flavor, it is probably out there somewhere but you may have to do a little traveling to get to it! I’ve traveled for bubble tea. What city has your favorite bubble tea spot?

Bubble tea isn’t just your regular iced tea

Bubble tea can be a milk based or non milk based tea that will instantly soothe your sweet tooth because it is usually served sweetened.

What makes bubble tea special? The boba that is added to the drink.  The boba, scientifically named tapioca pearls, has a chewy texture and they look like shiny black balls a little smaller than half an inch.

I guarantee that you or one of your friends have been missing out on this kind of drink

These little black balls offer a unique kind of interaction with your drink.

A normal straw just won’t do the trick when drinking bubble tea and you’ll know just what I’m talking about once you’re offered a straw made just for boba. The straws have wide openings made for boba to pass through when you’re drinking.

Most bubble teas come in a cute cup that has a plastic cover. You have to poke the straw through the plastic to get the flavor party started !

Friendly warning: Chew the boba before swallowing!

Some boba shops are known for boba that is more sweet or less firm in texture. Some boba shops are known for smaller boba, bigger boba, etc.

There are so many variations of boba drinks and every boba tea lover has a preference and soon you will too !

Boba tea is usually a sweet drink but if you’re not a sugar maniac, let your barista know your preferred sweetness level when ordering.

100% sweet is usually the maximum amount of sweetness! If you’re a picky person, then boba shops are definitely your friend because boba tea is truly a customizable drink.

Things you can choose

  • Ice amount
  • Toppings
  •  Sweetness
  •  Milk type
  •  and more!

Boba’s main ingredient, tapioca starch, is mostly grown in Asia and imported from Asia.

Through an exchange of cultures, bubble tea has made its way to the United States.

Now bubble tea has become so popular in the United States that there was a shortage in March 2021! Well, actually, there was a shipping and supply chain crisis but the first statement sounds believable. Cause..

Boba is really good and many popular boba shops have lines of people out of their doors! How do they not run out of boba?

Although the drink is usually dairy based, this should not be a problem for people who avoid milk. Your Boba tea shop may offer milk alternatives.

Coconut milk and almond milk, to name a couple. There are also drinks that are not made with milk. Ask your barista which fruity flavors don’t require milk!

Lucky enough, I live near a boba shop that has my favorite milk alternative, oat milk.  So don’t be shy, ask your barista about your options! It’s your drink and you should have it your way!

try these boba flavors for your first time

A few popular first time flavors are classic milk tea, strawberry milk tea, taro milk tea, and matcha milk tea.

  • Classic milk tea has a light flavor that makes it great for someone new to bubble tea.
  • Strawberry milk tea brings comfort because most people have tried strawberry milk and the strawberry milk tastes just like strawberry milk but with boba.
  • Taro tea is a bit different but it is a well known favorite. It’s very Instagram worthy because of its beautiful purple color. It tastes a tad bit sweet and similar to sweet potatoes..
  • Matcha, finely ground green tea leaves, is also a great beginner drink because most people have tasted green tea.
  • Green tea is also light in flavor so not too crazy as a first time flavor. These popular flavors are milk based.

Not feeling tea with a milky or creamy texture?

  • Try jasmine tea. It smells of flowers and is very light in texture. This makes for a great refreshing drink. Don’t forget to add boba !

I must warn you, if you dislike chewy textures, maybe ask for a few boba on the side or it will ruin your whole drink.

But I have to admit, if you want the full experience, get minimum boba in your drink and just tough it out! If you dislike it, for your next run, don’t get boba at all.

The flavors are still enjoyable without boba! There are also an endless amount of other toppings you can try instead!

Most bubble tea shops also sell food so be sure to check the food allergy notice. If you don’t have any allergies, then you can also grab a snack to go with your drink!

A combination of sweet and salty always sounds like a good decision! Boba shops may offer fries, chicken, octopus balls, and more on their food menu.

If you’re feeling like you have a lot of courage, here is a List of toppings to try in your drink

  • Red bean paste
  • Sweet potato
  •  Oreos
  •  Popping boba

They are surprisingly good!

And now that you’re a pro I encourage you to find your nearest boba tea shop, choose a flavor from the menu, or if you’re bold, create your own new flavors ! Mix it up !

Tell me which flavors you’ve tried in the comments ! I’d like to try something new myself.
